I dread the day I have to hook a new artist with my writing or give to a real editor. When I started writing scripts my descriptions were, "The wind rattles the trees, the trees rattle the windows like skeletal fingers on a chalk board. Victor tosses and turns to and fro in his pint size bed." Now they're like, "Branches are scratching the windows, think old horror film." Once you develop a good simpatico relationship with an artist you can cut the frill and get to the meat quicker.
I think as just a comic writer it is imperative that you learn the fundamentals of photoshop and illustrator. It's a hell of a lot easier to show notes pictorially to an artist than it is to describe them in an email.
