I’m a late addition to the show, but I WILL be there, with all of my latest books and graphic novels, and I’ll be doing custom sketches at the show. Big Plans for ComixTribe at New York Comic Con 2011

Great news! ComixTribe will be in full force at this year’s New York Comic Con, the east coast’s largest comic book and pop culture event. NYCC will be a coming out party of sorts for ComixTribe, and we’ve got plenty in store for the show. We’ve reserved a corner booth on the outskirts of the small press section of the show. It’s a great location, lending itself to plenty of foot traffic.

Holding down the fort at the show will be a number of familiar ComixTribers. CT publisher and co-founder Tyler James will be there the entire weekend. He’ll be joined in the booth by creator and New York native Joe Mulvey, who will be debuting his first creator-owned book at the show. And we’re thrilled to announce that John Lees, writer of our Creator Owned Zone column and author of The Standard is coming all the way from Glasgow to be at the show. We may feature some additional guests in the booth throughout the weekend, so stay tuned to the ComixTribe site for more details.

ComixTribe Programming

In keeping with the ComixTribe mission statement of creators helping creators make better comics, we’ve submitted proposals for two panels:

Help Wanted! How to Find Great Collaborators to Make Comics

Comics have always been a collaborative medium. But for the aspiring creator, finding collaborators can seem like a daunting challenge. In this informative panel, a number of up-and-coming independent comic creators reveal the secrets of finding great collaborators (artists, writers, colorists, letterers, editors, etc.) to bring comic ideas to life. If you’re a writer in need of an artist, or a penciller looking for a scribe, this is a panel you won’t want to miss.

The panel will answer such questions as: When are you ready to find collaborators? Where do you go to find great people to work with? And what are reasonable expectations for indie collaborations? Panelists will also discuss the pros and cons of common collaborative work arrangements, such as work-for-hire, co-creating, back-end payments, etc. It’s no secret that finding great collaborators is only a small part of the challenge of creating comics.

The panelists will also address the keys to maintaining strong working relationships throughout the duration of your book’s development. You’ll hear from a diverse group of hard-working independent creators who have overcome a number of obstacles (financial, geographic, self-doubt, etc.) to put together strong creative teams and make comics. Moderated by Tyler James (Epic, Tears of the Dragon), you’ll hear from writers John Lees (The Standard) and Richard Douek (Gutter Magic), and artist/writer team Jonathan Moore and Joey Esposito (Footprints) on what it takes to make successful collaborations work. If you’re ready to stop thinking about making comics and start putting a team in place to actually create them, you can’t miss this talk. Why Aren’t More People Reading Comics?

Comics are great. You know it, I know it, and the 100,000 other people attending New York Comic Con know it. Comic properties continue to tear up the charts on both the big and small screen, and comic conventions are huge draws from coast to coast. So why aren’t more people actually reading comics? And what exactly do non-comic readers know about our beloved medium anyway? Comic creator Joe Mulvey (SCAM) decided to interview a group of non-comic book readers to find out.

In this very unscientific, often hilarious, and incredibly informative study, Joe conducted initial interviews with a number of individuals, finding out their preconceptions of comics, knowledge of the medium, and consumption preferences of other media (books, tv, film, video games.) Joe then supplied each test subject with a stack of personalized comic book and graphic novel recommendations, which they agreed to read. Two weeks later, Joe conducted a follow-up interview, to find out what they now thought about comics. In this panel, Joe will share the surprising results of this study, results that offer great hope for the future of our favorite medium, and incredible insight for creators, publishers, and retailers interested in growing comics readership. Getting Ready for my first Art Show!

I’ve been invited to participate in a comic book art gallery show, taking place in Stamford, CT later this summer. While “Faster than a Speeding Bullet: An Exploration of Funnies, Superheroes and Comic Book Art” doesn’t kick off until August, I’m already pulling together the artwork I’ll have on display. Obviously, I’m going to try to put a strong foot forward, so I’ll have a mix of art I’ve done over the past decade framed and on display.

As of right now, here’s a look at what I’m planning on putting on display:

These pieces will be up at the gallery for a solid month, and the event will culminate with an artist Alley on Sept. 10th. So hopefully I’ll sell some pieces, sell some books, and get to talk comics with some great folks.

I’m Coming to the Albany Comic Con 2011!

That’s right! I’ve been invited to be a guest at the Albany Comic Con on April 17th. Seeing as I was already going to be in town that weekend for a friend’s wedding and that Albany is my home town, how could I not want to be a part of this show?

There’s a strong guest list at this spring’s show. I’m looking forward to chatting again with Ron Marz (Witchblade, Artifacts), Jim Zubkavich (Skullkickers), Jamal Igle (Super-Girl), and the Timony brothers (Night Owls.) There will be plenty of dealers in attendance selling comics, toys, original art, and more.

As for me, I’ll have copies of EPIC #0 and my graphic novel OVER for sale. And I’ve done a few custom Albany themed prints like the one above just for the show. If you’re in Albany that day, I hope you’ll stop by!

My Final Show of 2010: Dec. 18 Larry’s Wonderful Woburn Warehouse Show

Regardless, my final show of the year will be Larry’s Wonderful Woburn Warehouse Show December 18, 2010. It should be a Skullkicking good time, as hot indy creator Jim Zubkavich (writer of the breakout image series Skullkickers) will be there.

This show is heaven for anyone looking for $5 trades and $10 hardcovers, as well as older books to complete runs on various series, from the golden age until present day. Lot’s of great deals to be had.

I’ll be on hand, doing FREE SKETCH CARDS for the kids (or kids at heart) and will have copies of the OVER graphic novel for sale for the first time at a con.

ComiCONN Recap!

Had an awesome time a few weeks ago at the “First King-Sized Annual ComiCONN” in North Haven, MA. Show organizers Erik and Mitch put together a solid, fan-focused show, and were incredibly creator friendly. Once again, I did a solid number of free sketch cards for attendees, as well as some original art commissions. With a guest from Star Wars in attendance, there was a strong presence from Star Wars fans. So naturally, I got my Jedi on and knocked out a Vader, Chewie, Yoda, Leia, and a number of Darth Maul sketches during the event.

Sales were good and attendance was steady throughout the day. I had a number of great conversations with comic fans, and even saw some familiar faces from previous conventions. I also had a chance to chat with some pros, including Ron Marz (Witchblade, Angelus, Artifacts from Top Cow) and DC’s Jamal Igle (Supergirl, War of the Supermen) as well as up and coming artist Cesar Feliciano and the Luke Foster of the webcomic Moon Freight 3. Great guys and all super talented.

Free Comic Book Day 2010 @ Larry’s Comics

I finally have a minute to share what an absolute BLAST I had at Larry’s Comics in Lowell, MA last week for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY.

Larry was nice enough to provide me with a table to display my wares and do free sketchcards for his patrons. I decided to limit my product offerings for this event, figuring I wouldn’t have the space I’d have at a large convention. Turned out this strategy worked out just fine for me. Everyone who wanted a sketch card of their favorite character got one, and I was able to expose plenty of new readers to Tears of the Dragon. I had copies of the standard edition of the book (which sold out) as well as the Artist’s Edition, which also sold well. I even moved a few of my sketchbooks and some original sketches, in addition to the 40 or so free sketchcards I gave out.

Exhibiting next to me was local artist and Zombie Bomb architect Adam Miller. Zombie Bomb was the HOT book at the Boston Comic Con earlier this spring, selling out completely on Saturday. Zombie Bomb is an anthology series full of zombie stories by literally dozens of creators. Adam knocked out a Larry’s Exclusive Zombie Bomb cover just in time for the NBA playoffs. (See the Zombified Version of “The Big Three” above.) Adam’s a nice guy, talented artist, and it was awesome to see him move a lot of books at Larry’s.

Also at Larry’s this year were the super talented dudes from Th3rd Wold Studios, the guys behind “The Stuff of Legend.“ In attendance, illustrator Charles Wilson III and publisher Mike DeVito. I can’t stop talking about this book…it’s THAT good. (Read my review here.) CP Wilson did a ton of amazing sketches and it was great to see them connect with the fans. I have no doubt this book is going to be a classic.

One of the great things about Free Comic Book Day is that it gets a ton of people out and into comics stores who wouldn’t normally be there. (Not these girls above, of course…Requesting sketches of She-Hulk, Green Lantern and The Joker, clearly they know their comics.) But I talked to plenty of “first timers” who came through the doors and walked out with some great comics in hand.

A big thanks to Larry and the rest of his staff for throwing such a great event. He really rolled out the red carpet for us creators. He even took the time to give me some feedback on EPIC, which I’ll be starting to promote this month and is gearing up to make a huge splash later this summer. Sales-wise, I did about as well as I’ve done at some large conventions last year, so it was certainly well worth my time. And the opportunity to interact with local comics fans…well, you just can’t beat it.

Can’t wait until next year!

Boston Comic Con 2010 Recap!

What a show!

I did this special Silver Surfer cover recreation for Dan D. and his girlfriend. They loved it.

The Boston Comic-Con, which for all intents and purposes is my local show, has steadily grown each year. But the 2010 show set a new bar. With a new location, bigger showroom, and an incredible guest list headlined by JIM LEE, It’s not surprising the show reached capacity at one point Saturday, and the fire marshals had to stop people from coming.

For me, the show kicked major butt. I had done a lot of prepping for the show, undertaking on a massive pre-order campaign which saw me do over 100 pieces of original art for the show. I stepped up my table set up once again (view video of my set up here.) Saturday, I was sketching pretty much the entire show, and moved a lot of books. And the Spider-man @ Fenway print sold like hotcakes. In fact, by the end of Day 1, I had already had my most successful con, more than doubling sales from last year’s Boston Comic Con. (For a glimpse at Day 1, check out this video.)

Day 2 of the show was a lot more of the same. While the crowds weren’t quite as big, they were definitely steady. Tears of the Dragon made its convention debut , and I was quite pleased with how that book sold. Most of the rest of the sketches and sketch cards I did pre-show were picked up, and I had a chance to have some great discussions with some fans.

Special thanks to Eric Ratcliffe from Comic Related, who manned my booth from time to time Sunday, giving me a chance to stretch my legs a bit.

Boston Comic Con Video Part 2- Saturday

Saturday at the Boston Comic Con was crazy! Lines were around the block to get in, with some folks waiting as many as two hours to get in. Still, everyone seemed in very good spirits. And even though the costume contest wasn’t until Sunday, plenty of rock solid costumes were in attendance.

That’s right, this year’s Boston Comic Con, the biggest and best comics show in Boston in years is finally here. The show is at the Westin Boston Waterfront on Saturday and Sunday April 10-11 from 10am to 5pm each day.

For me, this is the official kick-off to convention season. I’ve been prepping for the show for months! I’m launching a new book at the show and have done more than 75 pieces of original art, free sketch cards, and commissions.

If you’re looking for me at the show, I’ll be in artist’s alley. This is going to be a packed show, so to find me, keep an eye out for my convention banner. My table will also be sporting a brand new red table cloth, which will hopefully help me stand out a bit from the crowd.

ComiCONN 2010 has invited me as a guest for their 1st annual super-sized show on May 15, 2010! Looks like my convention schedule is expanding. Should be a fun show, and of course, I’ll be doing a free sketch promotion, and hopefully debuting a new book or two.

2010 Convention Schedule Announced!

It’s never too early to plan, therefore I’m announcing my initial convention appearances for 2010 now! Today I’m announcing four major shows I’ll be attending in the new year.

First up will be the Boston Comic Con. The Boston show, a local one for me, has always been a successful one for me in the past. This spring’s Boston show should be the biggest ever, featuring a brand new location and an expanded guest list. Two words…Jim Lee.

I’m also announcing two major summer shows. The New England Small Press Assembly in Warwick, RI is a no-brainer. I’ve heard good things about this indy-friendly show, and look forward to checking it out. And then, once again, I’ll return to the New York Comic Con (just 300 days away, their website assures me.) This time, I’m looking to have a spot in artists alley, and hope to debut the Over graphic novel at that show.

And finally, next fall, I’ll be returning to the Baltimore Comic-Con. I had such a great time at this show last year, that I’d be a fool not to return.

So there it is. Hope to see many of you at one of these shows. I’ll also be looking to add additional shows to my schedule where time and cashola permit.

I’ll also be attending the first annual ComicCONN this year (May 15, North Haven, CT.) The organizers have been nice enough to invite me as a featured guest. I’m donating art to their raffle, and much looking forward to the show.
